Michele Chiarlo sources grapes from strictly selected Barbera vineyards with excellent exposure to produce a superb, balanced wine. The choice vineyards are in the southern area of Asti province, especially the hills around Nizza Monferrato. Temperature controlled maceration and fermentation on the skins for 10 days in stainless steel tanks yields the dark, rich color that is typical of great Barberas. The wine is aged in large French oak casks for 16 months total aging, 3 months in oak, rest in stainless steel and bottle before release.

Harvest Note
The 2018 vintage began with mild temperatures in the winter and little to no rainfalll, conditions which continued into December and January. Though in the second half of February a sharp drop in temperatures and heavy snowfall prevailed and then March, April and May were marked by abundant rainfall. These conditions were prosperous since it helped in restoring the depleted aquifers from the 2017 vintage where there was very little precipitation. The excessive rains of May and the first half of June put a strain on the winemakers, who had to keep an attentive watch, using the proper agronomic techniques to ensure plant health. We paid particular attention to green pruning of the Barbera and thinning of the bunches in order to achieve yields that were beneficial for the wine we produced. The end of August through the first half of September exhibited particularly cool nights that allowed the development of intense and delicate aromas. The harvest was right on time, if not slightly ahead, with perfectly healthy and ripe grapes. The Barbera grapes reached an excellent physiological and phenolic maturation. Barbere d’Asti wines have particularly intense aromas and excellent structure, they are certainly a great vintage.
Tasting Note
Ruby red in color with hues of violet. Elegant and intense, with notes of fresh mature red fruit, such as cherry and currant. Harmonious, with great structure and roundness. Beautiful savory finish.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with pasta with tomato sauce, pizza, fish, and white meat.
