The Napa Valley Merlot fruit comes from diverse vineyard sites ranging from Suscol Springs Ranch in the southeastern corner of Napa Valley to sites in Rutherford and Calistoga. Suscol Springs is a unique site for Merlot that stresses the vines resulting in smaller, more concentrated fruit. Each vineyard produces differing and distinctive grapes, resulting in a complex, multi-layered Merlot that is bold and elegant, as well as concentrated and fresh. The separate lots of Merlot from each vineyard site were hand-harvested at night to maintain cool temperatures and integrity of the fruit. The lots were fermented in stainless steel tanks. Gentle pumpovers during fermentation extracted color, flavor and tannins from the grapeskins. The wines finished secondary fermentation in French oak barrels (44% new) where they aged until blending, then we reintroduced the final blend to barrel for full integration of toast and oak structure with the rich, ripe fruit aromas.

Harvest Note
The 2019 season began with ample rainfall, which filled the soils in advance of a long and even growing season. Overall temperatures were cooler in 2019, and there were no extreme heat waves. This steady weather allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly in the vineyards, leading to well balanced wines ideal for long term cellaring.
Tasting Note
Aromas of ripe fruits including plum, blackberry, and black cherry are followed by additional notes of violet and minerality. On the palate, the wine is velvety and full-bodied bodied with concentrated and rich flavors of blackberry and plum. Bright acidity supports the wine, showcasing notes of minerality, herbs, and florals. Fine tannins drive the long black cherry finish of this deeply flavorful and elegant wine.
