Le Grande Pompée is a character from Victor Hugo’s The Legend of the Ages who fought alongside Charlemagne, noted for his love of wine from the right bank of the Rhône. Saint-Joseph has steep hillsides carved into terraces in ancient times. The 10- to 30-year-old Syrah vines are planted in granite and schist soils. The grapes are hand harvested, destemmed, and fermented. The maceration lasts three weeks with daily pump overs. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak vats. Age up to 10 years.
Harvest Note
Winter and early spring were very dry. Budburst occurred in early April. Frequent rains and cool temperatures in May caused a slight delay, but then ripening continued with good conditions. Veraison arrived earlier than average. Overall, the weather conditions allowed for a healthy grape ripening process.
Tasting Note
Garnet red in color, this well-balanced and structured wine offers aromas of wild strawberry, redcurrant, and black pepper.
