This grape is permitted in the DOC wines of more than 40 Italian appellations. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is the most notable, as well as Castel del Monte DOC. The wines are round, smooth and approachable and are usually best in youth. The grape is known for its deep color, medium to full body, moderate acidity, notable extract and good alcohol level. It has mild tannin.
Montepulciano is a high yielding variety that ripens late and retains green flavors if harvested too early.
Montepulciano the grape should not be confused with the wine Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is named for its village. Native to Italy, the vine most likely originated in Tuscany and may be related to Sangiovese. Oddly enough, today the grape is not found anywhere near the village of Montepulciano.
