Côte Rôtie is one of the oldest vineyard regions of France. Its two slopes of Côte Blonde and Côte Brune are said to derive their names from Lord Maugiron who divided his estate between his blonde and brunette daughters. The Les Pierrelles vineyard is in the heart of Côte Blonde, known for smooth rounded wines, and is named for the stone wall surrounding the vineyard as “pierres” means stones. The 30- to 50-year-old vines grow on a steep 56-percent South-facing slope in soils of decomposing micaschists and exposed bedrock. The organic Syrah grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and demi-muids, 20% of which are new.
