Château La Nerthe

Holiday Gifting Guide 2023: The Best Châteauneuf-du-Papes

December 18, 2023

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is known as one of the most noble wines on the planet. Made from up to 13 allowable grape varieties from the appellation, the wines can age for decades.

Château La Nerthe is in contention for being one of the oldest estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate was first purchased in 1560 with the historic Château built later in 1736. Château La Nerthe deserves credit for being one of the first estates to bottle their own wine and one of the first estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to export their wine outside of France. Another first that belongs to the estate is that Château La Nerthe began the practice of destemming 100% of their vines in the 1800’s. By this point in time, Château La Nerthe was the most expensive wine from the Southern Rhône.

With red garnet with purple tints, this silky, round wine offers notes of cherry, plum, licorice, and menthol. The tannins are supple, and the finish is long. A wine with cellaring potential of a decade or more.
