Cakebread, Johnson Blum decide their future lies on Mullan Road Cellars

October 10, 2023

Much like Captain John Mullan, the namesake to the winery Mullan Road Cellars, second generation vigneron Dennis Cakebread went exploring to the Northwest, in Cakebread’s case, to grow the Napa Valley-based Cakebread Cellars empire. And, like Mullan did in 1854, Cakebread settled in Walla Walla, Wash., in advance of the 2012 harvest adjacent towhat is today the memorial Mullan Road.

Some 11 years later, in the thick of harvest, Cakebread has evolved Mullan Road Cellars with a new winemaker, Napa Valley veteran Sally Johnson Blum, hired earlier this summer. Mullan Road Cellars also opened a new tasting room this summer in the Seattle suburb of Woodinville, Wash., to raise their brand recognition and capitalize on the direct-to-consumer sales trend for Washington wineries.
