Made by the family company, Lucano 1894, Amaro Lucano has become not only a source of regional pride, but a national institution and a key support for Italian craftsmanship around the world.
The well-known flagship blend contains more than 30 herbs, including some common wormwood, clary sage, mush yarrow, holy thistle, bitter orange, angelica, and elderberry as well as the key ingredient to all amaros: gentian root, which provides the bitter finish indicated by the word amaro. All this is no family secret: Fourth-generation proprietor/CEO Francesco Vena says that “it’s about the process” of drying, mixing, and macerating those herbs. The formula will remain known only to his father, Pasquale, until its passed down to the next generation.
