Nearing five decades since Sequoia Grove’s founding in 1979, this well-known estate-focused brand has only increased its commitment to individuality in terms of both style and terroir rather than going down the path of uniformity. Sommeliers will love the fact that the most recent vintages of Sequoia Grove’s wines are more acid-driven and perceptively restrained in oak and alcohol, attributes favorable to vineyard distinctions.
They go beyond expressing Napa Valley as a whole: The winery is also releasing bottlings that distinctively express sub appellations as specific as East and West Rutherford Bench. Make no mistake, this has as much to do with oversight in the vineyard than with decisions made by winemakers-though it helps to have a winemaker with a built-in sense of restraint, an apt descriptor for Sequoia Grove winemaker Jesse Fox.
