Marsannay is a large and diverse appellation spread across 3 communes at the far north sector of the Cote d'Or. Soils are mostly clay and small stones on slopes oriented to the east and southeast. This is the only Burgundian appellation permitted to produce and label wines in all three colors. In addition, Marsannay has campaigned for years to elevate as many as 14 terroirs to the status of Premier Cru. Despite a long history of viticulture, the appellation has never achieved the notoriety of the famous villages just to the South. This has allowed Marsannay to retain a reputation for great value even as quality has improved.
