Rugiens is the most well-known of the Pommard Premier Crus, highly regarded for its complexity and power as well as a capacity for long aging. Soils are deep red clay which tend to impart structure and elegance to the wines. Pinot Noir here is harvested manually and brought to the nearby winery for triage, destemming, and natural fermentation in passive oak vats. After alcoholic fermentation is complete the wine is racked into oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and extended aging. Approximately 16 months later the cuvee is reassembled for bottling.

Harvest Note
2023 was a hot and dry growing season which was saved by significant rain in June. This allowed the vines to withstand summer heat and drought and led to ideal sanitary conditions and a modest yield yet concentrated vintage.
Tasting Note
Rugiens wines tend to be bold and imposing upon release with dark fruit behind a wall of damp earth and tannic presence. With time in bottle or with aeration a complex range of spice notes and floral nuances are present. The wine finishes dry with very long persistence, and makes a powerful case for its revered status.
