Cool and restrained aromas are composed by notes of essence of red berries humus and forest floor. The juicy yet punchy and serious medium-bodied flavors exude evident minerality on the very well-delineated flavors that flash a hint of bitter pit fruit character on the youthfully austere and persistent finish.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) opens in the glass with aromas of cherries, cassis and plums, complemented by hints of smoke and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and charming, it’s bright and elegant, with fine tannins and a long, mineral finish.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques Premier Cru has an outgoing and almost exotic bouquet of kirsch, orange peel and just a touch of Seville orange marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and well-integrated oak. Very harmonious in style. I appreciate the delineation of this Premier Cru and the minerality and tension that flows on the finish. Well-crafted and stylish.

A more subtle wood regimen more easily allows the cooler aromas of black currant, cherry, spice and sauvage nuances to be appreciated. The broad-shouldered flavors are relatively fine in the context of what is typical for LSJ with good minerality really arising on the powerful, muscular and youthfully austere finish. Excellent and packed with development potential.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is very promising, unfolding to reveal scents of sweet red berries, cassis, dark chocolate, smoked meats and espresso roast. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with refined tannins and plenty of carnal nuances to complement its ripe core of fruit.
