The organic Animaetnea 2022 Etna Rosso Contrada Santo Spirito Animardente shows a lively mix of wild berry, cherry, blue flower and citrusy orange essence backed by grilled herb and crushed stone. The wine offers good complexity over a tight, medium-bodied texture with fine tannins. Fruit comes from 70-year-old alberello vines planted at 750 meters in elevation on stony soils over lava flows. Following 15 days of fermentation and maceration in stainless steel, the wine matured in large oak casks for 18 months. This is lovely to drink now.

The 2021 Etna Rosso Animardenta Santo Spirito is wickedly fresh, opening with a whiff of savory herbs and crushed rocks that gives way to wild strawberries and rose petals. This possesses a lovely inner sweetness that’s further enhanced by ripe red berries as autumnal spices swirl atop a core of grippy tannin. The 2021 finishes long, gently tannic and beautifully balanced. A note of licorice remains on the close.
