The biggest stylistic outlier in the Montes lineup is the 2021 Taita, a Cabernet Sauvignon produced from their Marchigüe property and blended with different degrees of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah in each vintage. It derives from a specific, low-yielding plot planted in decomposed granite soils made more complex by the effects of ancient glaciation. It offers a more contemporary and transparent profile than the rest of the portfolio, opening with a distinctly lifted, floral bouquet and a notable sense of levity. The mouthfeel echoes with an elegant, seamless texture that, while still framed by a judicious use of new wood, feels much less forced into a commercially viable paradigm than the rest of their offerings. The finish is similarly buoyant and refined, harmonizing high-toned energy, vibrant acidity and silky tannins.

Rich, voluptuously sweet ripe black fruit with plenty of chocolate, dark plums and a touch of quince, prunes and dried orange. Lush, concentrated and round but still juicy, with firm yet fine-grained tannins and a very long finish. Probably the most opulent red from Montes with a blend of 85% cabernet sauvignon and 15% selected blend, including some merlot and cabernet franc. The warmth of the ripeness makes it a good winter wine. 18 months in French barrels, of which 70% is new. Drink or hold.
