The 2019 Taurasi Pietrafusa is darkly inviting, mixing plum sauce with sage, underbrush and hints of cocoa. It’s silky-smooth yet with an abundance of energy, as zesty acidity and tart wild berry fruits mingle over a salty core of minerality. The 2019 finishes long, potent and tannic while maintaining a lovely inner freshness, the perfect mix for a long and steady evolution.

An earthy, wet nose of dewy leaves and soil after a storm gets some sparkle from undertones of plum and cherry. The cool, astringent palate continues balancing the dirt and cherry elements, while streamlined acid glides past slick yet tough tannins

Ripe, sweet cherries, dried cranberries, cinnamon and Christmas spices. Medium-bodied and supple on the palate with smooth tannins and juicy, ripe berries. A lighter expression of Taurasi. A little more depth would take this to the next level. Drink now.

In the bottle with the burgundy-colored label, the Villa Matilde Avallone 2017 Taurasi Tenuta Pietrafusa was born in a scorching hot vintage but manages surprising elegance nonetheless with a pretty mineral tone of crushed stone that frames black cherry, plum and soft spice. The intensity of all those aromas balances out nicely. The finish is not too long, but that leanness works in favor of the wine’s food-friendly disposition.
