A creamy, layered white with aromas of dried pineapples, orange curd, nutmeg, sage and crushed stones. Fresh and focused, with an excellent balance of fruit and spicy, chalky notes. Drink now.
I love the label design of the Villa Matilde 2019 Greco di Tufo Avallone Tenuta Pietrafusa Daltavilla, which shows a proud-looking Italian she-wolf etched onto white paper. The sly and intelligent-looking wolf acts as a guardian to the softly textured white wine on the inside of this bottle. This is a pretty, lean to mid-weight wine that reveals ripe pear, peach, nectarine and toasted almond. For a fleeting moment, I picked up a hint of spicy white licorice as well.
The 2019 Greco di Tufo Tenute di Altavilla is almost smoky with intense minerality that lifts from this glass, mixing pear with peppery florals. The cheeks pucker from the very first sip. Cascading citrus tones, at times yellow and at other times green, mix with zesty acidity and a hint of tannin further firming up the expression.
Fruity aromas of apricot and white peach follow over to the crisp, savory palate along with tangy Meyer lemon. It closes on a note of white almond.
There’s a fresh and juicy feel with a wealth of bright lemons and apples here. The palate has a juicy and elegantly fresh build of pristine peaches and lemons. Impressive.
