Rugiens is the most well-known of the Pommard Premier Crus, highly regarded for its complexity and power as well as a capacity for long aging. Soils are deep red clay which tend to impart structure and elegance to the wines. Pinot Noir here is harvested manually and brought to the nearby winery for triage, destemming, and natural fermentation in passive oak vats. After alcoholic fermentation is complete the wine is racked into oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and extended aging. Approximately 16 months later the cuvee is reassembled for bottling.
