At Quinta do Portal, environmental responsibility is integrated into both vineyard management and winery operations through a series of carefully implemented sustainable practices.
Vineyard Management
- Our vineyards are managed with a strong focus on soil health, erosion control, and reduced chemical input:
- No tilling between vine rows, preserving soil structure and biodiversity
- Incorporation of pruning wood into the soil, naturally enriching organic matter
- Elimination of residual herbicides
- Precise, controlled application of phytopharmaceuticals to minimize environmental impact
- Increasing use of organic ground cover and natural vegetation
- Integrated pest management, applying plant protection products only when the economic threshold of infestation is reached
Thoughtful Slope Management
- Vines planted in the traditional “Vinha ao Alto” system on slopes up to 40%
- On steeper slopes (40–60%), terraced planting with a single row of vines
This approach reduces erosion, avoids herbicide use on slopes, and lowers terrace height for improved environmental stability.
Renewable Energy
In May 2022, we installed photovoltaic solar panels, enabling us to generate nearly 50% of our electricity needs through renewable energy.
Harvest & Winemaking Sustainability
During harvest, we capture and reuse CO₂ produced during fermentation to for inerting of lagares and vats – reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency.
