Rich, sweet berries with chocolate. Juicy and tangy on the palate crammed with sweet berries. Medium to full body with firm, dusty tannins and some bitter chocolate at the end. Drink now.

This light to mid-weight red (not a description used very often for Aglianico) delivers engaging hints of tar alongside fine tannins. The focus here is definitely on the minerals, not the fruit. Though a lighter style of wine, it is not fleeting. Indeed, it has a real presence. Uplifting freshness accompanies its lovely austerity.

The 2016 Villa Matilde Aglianico Rocca dei Leoni Aglianico is a deep violet in the glass. Straight from the bottle the aromas are expressive. Crushed berry, wild flowers, spices and lavender. On the palate, this 100% Aglianico is vibrant and mouthwatering. Wild red berries are tantalizing. As a result of the stainless vinification, the flavors are pristine. Dusty minerals, fresh herbs and tobacco add complexity. I love this.

The 2017 Aglianico Rocca dei Leoni shows dusty black cherry, complemented by sweet spices, white smoke, and alluring dark florals. On the palate, velvety textures give way to polished blue and black fruits, with a bump of acid that provides lift as minerals slowly mount on the senses. The finish is medium in length, showing hints of tobacco, licorice, and inner earth tones.

Notes of menthol, thyme and lavender accent this wine’s brambly fruit flavors. Its raspy tannins and smoky notes make it a match for barbecue.
