From a five-hectare plot in Montalcino’s remote and forested northwest where the 18th century estate is located, Poggio Dorio is suffused with sweet spice and cedar atop macerated cherry. Smooth, polished fruit juxtaposes the muscular tannins and drying oak character. At the moment, this is quite a youthful and austere mouthful yet ultimately feels equalised in its proportions. Appealing bitter orange peel and sarsaparilla add exotic intrigue. Note that Silvio Nardi abstained from producing its Manachiara cru bottling in 2019.

Fresh roses and violets with red cherries and sandalwood in both the nose and palate. It’s medium- to full-bodied and firm-tannined with a bright, racy finish. Give it three to four years to come together

Darkly alluring and rich in the glass, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Poggio Doria opens with a blend of rosemary and sage, giving way to steeped plums, dark chocolate and spiced orange. This is silky, nearly creamy in feel, with brisk acidity balancing out its core of tart wild berry fruit. The 2019 finishes structured and long with a bitter tinge and aggressive wood tannins penetrating deeply. The Vigneto Poggio Doria spends twelve months in a combination of new and used tonneaux, followed by another twelve months in Slavonian oak barrels before bottling. It will require serious patience to allow this to mellow.

The Tenute Silvio Nardi 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Poggio Doria is a dark wine, certainly in character, but also in appearance and flavor profile compared to the estate’s village bottling. Surrounded by forest but with a wide panorama and plenty of light, Poggio Doria has a hearty mix of sand and clay soils that help to solidify the freshness and the savory aromas of the wine. This vintage is especially bold and concrete with black plum, crushed stone and a hint of something gamey like vintage suede or leather. The 15% alcohol content is evident in this wine, but you also get more overall complexity and depth with big bones and considerable structure for aging

Ample black cherry and blackberry fruit flavors mark this Brunello, along with dense, robust tannins. Iron and tar accents chime in as this winds down on the finish.
