A reserved yet gorgeously spicy nose reluctantly displays its aromas of red and dark currant that also flash hints of jasmine tea. The sleek, intense and seductively textured flavors possess both excellent volume and mid-palate concentration before terminating in a powerful mineral-driven finish that goes on and on.

There are two barrels of the 2019 Musigny Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot), a brilliant cuvée that soars from the glass with aromas of cherries, raspberries, rose petals, blood orange, sweet soil tones and Indian spices. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it’s sumptuous and concentrated, with beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a long, penetrating finish.

It has a fresh, vibrant bouquet of mainly black fruit infused with black pepper, truffle and sous-bois and gaining in intensity with every swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and very well balanced, displaying real finesse and touches of sage and cumin toward a complex finish that in my opinion is enhanced by the stems (incidentally, this is not the first time they have been used, often to increase the volume and improve the pigeage). This is a cerebral and captivating Musigny.

A densely fruited and equally spicy if more restrained nose grudgingly displays liqueur-like aromas of plum, Asian-style spices, sandalwood, hoisin and an abundance of floral influences. The round and sleek large scaled flavors re rich to the point of opulence though underneath the baby fat is evident muscle and minerality, both of which gradually emerges as the hugely long finish sits on the palate.

The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru demands more coaxing than the Les Amoureuses, eventually revealing cranberry and hints of hoisin, sous-bois, tobacco and crushed stone aromas, all very complex. The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannin framing pure dark berry fruit laced with brown spice, tobacco and sage. This Musigny displays wonderful density and power, yet retains the precision of a noble Burgundy on the long finish.
