Intense is the word, as the 2019 Barrua unfolds with a smoky burst of ashen stones and exotic spices that blow off to reveal depths of plum sauce and sage complemented by talc. Silky and polished, this excels with its cooling acidity and savory mineral tones that embellish its core of rich wild berries. Sweet tannins frame the finale, as the 2019 finishes long and spicy with potent balsamic tinged black fruits and tangerine hints

The 2018 Barrua is hauntingly dark and intense, as sweet sage and smoke give way to graphite-tinged plums and rum-soaked currants. This is texturally deep, nearly creamy in feel, with a polished wave of sleek black fruits underscored by savory herbs and minerals that slowly saturate. There is much complexity within, yet the 2018 remains youthfully poised, tapering off long and potent. Cocoa and medicinal blackberry suggestions slowly fade. This is a drop-dead gorgeous vintage for Agricola Punica’s Barrua.

Heat and spice leap off the nose of this wine. Aromas of grilled meat, smoke, soil and leaves are followed by fresh cherries and raspberries. Deeper notes of mixed berries on the palate accompany raw meat, iron-rich soil, dark chocolate and spices. Firm tannins and lots of acid make for satisfying drinking now but also leave room to grow.

Structured and focused with dark berries, dark cherries, dried herbs, bark and some cloves. Medium to full body with fine, firm tannins. Serious, layered and a bitter chocolate-like, funnelled finish with excellent length. Best after 2024.
