Riesling grows at the top of this clos, where the soils are thin and rocky muschelkalk, the limestone remnants of a sea bed. The 44-year-old vines grew a substantial 2018, its rooty scents of sweet carrots and its heightened acidity tugging on the musky, honeyed richness.

Olivier Humbrecht selects this from his old vines in Turckheim, averaging 52 years of age, on the rich soils of the valley floor. It’s a ripe 2018, so ripe that Whitney Asher of Brava in Lenox, Mass., described it as “a big, balanced baker—a big fat guy you know can make pie.” A bright, joyous riesling, fragrant with white rose scents, high energy with complex layers of richness.

This wine is a blend from parcels around Gueberschwihr, the vines averaging 44 years old, along with some young-vine fruit from the Hengst vineyard. Olivier Humbrecht finds
that these limestone soils retain moisture for the vines, so they don’t suffer from hydric stress. The fruit they deliver is focused on citrus, with notes of orange and lime tightened up by a seashell minerality. There are delicate scents of narcissus carried by the buzz of acidity.

A joyful Alsace dry riesling that’s brimming with citrus and floral aromas, plus notes of peach and melon. So lively and playful, in spite of the considerable substance, this medium-to full-bodied wine has a long, dry and stony finish. Beautiful balance! From biodynamically grown grapes.
