The Orvieto Classico Superiore zone, the heartland of Umbria’s distinct whites, is characterized by higher elevations and cooler temperatures. The vineyards are overlooking Lago di Corbara on the south bank. Soils here are a composite of clay and limestone. Given soils and climatic conditions, whites here are defined by higher aromatics, structure derived from total acids, and freshness.

Harvest Note
The 2017 vintage in central Umbria defies easy description. The cycle of events through the growing season were unusual. The winter was uncharacteristically mild and dry. Vines never quite remained dormant for long, and the area was experiencing a drought. Fast forward to spring, and moderate temperatures prompted early budding. Thankfully, the area was not affected by an early frost. Early budding varieties had more success through the entire season. By May however, the drought had intensified, unusually high summertime temperatures arrived, and late budding varieties suffered to set fruit properly. Yields were lower (by 40% in Salviano’s case), so care and hard work in the vineyard were most important. An earlier than usual harvest (by three weeks) arrived, yet the quality of the fruit was undiminished despite the circumstances. Overall, while the wines have slightly lower total acids and higher pH levels, the purity of fruit and aromatics maintain typical characteristics of the region.
Tasting Note
Pure and crisp, with elegant aromas of ripe fruit. A well-structured, refreshing and beautifully balanced wine.
Food Pairing
The high acidity and aromatics of Orvieto are an admirable ally to all manner of green vegetable preparations. For a classical approach, go for a pea soup or pasta primavera. Stepping outside of Italian culture cuisine, pour a glass with all manner of crudo finished with new olive oil. New world dishes such as fish tacos, guacamole and tuna poke display Orvieto’s gastric range.
