Sequoia Grove Napa Valley Chardonnay is made in a bright, clean style, emphasizing varietal expression and balance. The Chardonnay grapes mostly come from Dijon and Wente clones grown in the renowned Carneros District in Napa Valley from such prestigious growers as the Haire vineyard, the Ghisletta vineyard, and the Cunat vineyard in Oak Knoll. In these vineyards, the long, cool growing season allows fruit to ripen slowly and evenly. The grapes are hand harvested between 21 and 24 brix, at night into shallow bins, then hand sorted and whole-cluster pressed. The juice is inoculated with white Burgundy yeast strains in stainless steel tanks, then quickly transferred to French oak barrels with periodic stirring of the lees for extra complexity and finesse. To preserve the fresh acidity of the wine, Sequoia Grove never permits malolactic fermentation in its Chardonnay.

Harvest Note
The 2017 harvest started off with a good amount of water in the ground. The second winter of large rainfall in December, January and February helped set up ground water levels for the growing season. March and May were both warm which helped the season get off to an early start with nice fruit set. A rare, 5-day hot streak in early September actually froze sugar levels, which helped deliver balanced wines with moderate alcohol levels. Tonnage levels were average and quality is excellent.
Tasting Note
Fresh aromas of lemon, lime, pear and nectarine give way to slight toasted marshmellow, toasted almonds, plain toast and brioche. The palate is fresh, crisp, clean and bright with layers of flavor from nectarine to nutmeg, brioche, and custard.
Food Pairing
This is a very food friendly wine and will go well with most dishes, from appetizers to soups to main courses. Serve slightly chilled to appreciate the full range of flavors. This wine will get richer and evolve for at least five years.

Though it has a distinctive profile, Chardonnay reflects other factors such as soil composition and vinification technique. Chardonnay is a reliable, hardy and prolific vine whose only real vulnerabilities are frost and uneven development of fruit.
