The vineyards that produce the grapes for the Montes Alpha Special Cuvée Chardonnay are located at the Zapallar estate in the Aconcagua Valley, 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The proximity of the vines to the sea provides ideal conditions for the slow and full ripening of this Chardonnay. The variability in the marine terrace soils, which range from sandy to clay-loam, lends this wine enormous complexity with great cool-climate character, but with an impressive aromatic palate. All the vines are trellised to vertical shoot position and drip irrigated. Yields are usually less than 8,000 lbs/acre with well-distributed bunches that allow for very good ventilation, producing grapes in excellent health that benefit from cool temperatures throughout the ripening period.

Harvest Note
The 2020 harvest season began with a very dry 2019 winter, and very low levels of precipitation in the southern zone of central Chile, which affected all growing stages of the vines. While this year saw less available water, the freshness of the summer maintained the vineyard with a moderate level of stress and good health, ideal conditions that allowed winemakers to calmly determine the best days for harvest.
Tasting Note
The wine has a pale-golden color. On the nose are abundant notes of tropical fruit such as candied papaya, grapefruit, orange, and a subtle hint of banana. Its time in barrel adds notes of dulce de leche, nougat, vanilla, and complex sensations on the palate, while maintaining fresh, crunchy acidity, medium body and a long, flavor filled finish.
Food Pairing
Pair with salmon tartare, lobster and fresh shellfish, ripe cheeses and hot dishes such as crab casserole, white meats with light sauces, and pasta.

About the Grape

Though it has a distinctive profile, Chardonnay reflects other factors such as soil composition and vinification technique. Chardonnay is a reliable, hardy and prolific vine whose only real vulnerabilities are frost and uneven development of fruit.
