Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2004

Taittinger

Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2004

Certified Sustainable, Organic or Biodynamic Green Certified

Region: France / Champagne
Grapes: 100% Chardonnay

Produced only in exceptional vintage years and intended as the ultimate expression of the Taittinger style, this wine is composed entirely of Chardonnay grapes grown in the top vineyards of the prestigious Côte des Blancs. Only the first press juice is used. A small proportion (5%) of the blend spends three to four months in new oak barrels, enhancing the intrinsic qualities of the final blend. Prior to disgorgement, the Blanc de Blancs is aged for 10 years on the lees in 13th-century chalk cellars that were once the property of Saint Nicaise abbey.

harvest note

Despite its unremarkable weather conditions, 2004 was an exuberant vintage. Although the winter was cold, there was no extended period of intense low temperatures. Spring was very pleasant with little rainfall. Blossoming was very steady, beginning in mid-June amidst relatively cool temperatures. A mild and seldom sunny, summer was dry until mid-August when a much needed period of rain arrived. The return of the sun and warmth at the beginning of September then helped the fruit ripen. The harvest, which started with the Chardonnays on 20 September, proved to be one of the most abundant in the history of the Champagne region. The grapes were very healthy and of excellent quality. The Chardonnays were of remarkable quality: balanced, complex, long, fresh and invigorating. The Pinots Noirs were elegant and well structured.

tasting note

A pale yellow Champagne with very light, abundant bubbles which rise steadily to form a fine mousse. The pure bouquet opens with a contrast between an already well-developed intensity and a finesse that reveals aromas of pears, greengages and white flowers. On the palate, a lively, direct, precise attack is dominated by flavours of candied lemon zest and fresh pineapple. The mid palate is fresh and balanced. The overall impression is of generosity, voluptuousness and volume, highlighted by characteristic grapefruit and citrus notes. The zesty finish is long, lingering and complex.

food pairing

A perfect accompaniment to first courses such as seafood and shellfish.
