Taita 2013

Taita 2013

Certified Sustainable, Organic or Biodynamic Green Certified

Region: Chile / Colchagua Valley
Grapes: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% at the winemaker’s discretion

The vineyards destined for Taita are located at Montes' El Arcángel de Marchigüe Estate vineyard. Like a large percentage of Chilean soils, those in Marchigüe feature decomposed granite soils. Some plots feature high clay content and moderate depths, while others are shallower with less clay, more silt, and more rocks. The Taita plot was influenced by glacial action, evidence of which are the sharp, angular stones left by passing glaciers in combination with round stones that resulted from water running over the surface of the vineyard area for ages. The Taita vineyards are dry farmed. The result of these naturally managed vineyards is fewer clusters per vine with smaller and more concentrated grapes.

harvest note

Lack of rain during the 2012/13 winter caused a significant water deficit in the Colchagua Valley, and in particular at Marchigüe, where our Taita is born. The spring was very cold, with temperatures lower than normal, and in some areas causing considerable damage to young shoots. In central Chile, this was less of a problem, but the cool spring delayed budburst and lowered yields, as well as delaying ripening by one to two weeks compared to the previous season. Summer was mild, with no excessively hot days. Veraison was delayed until the beginning of February, about two weeks later than usual. However, because of the lower numbers of clusters, the vines were able to ripen each cluster to optimal levels. In summary, the 2013 harvest produced naturally low yields of fresh, healthy fruit, with good acidity and favourable pH parameters. Coupled with great color and a smooth tannin structure promise a long-lived vintage.

tasting note

Deep garnet-red in color. The perfumed, complex nose exhibits a wide range of ripe red- and black-fruit aromas along with interesting spice notes, delicate toast, and leather fragrances. The palate is exuberant and round with well-structured tannins that lend breadth, sweetness, and a remarkably long finish.

food pairing

Goes well with red meat, lamb, cheese.
