Clos de Beauvenir Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2013

Certified Sustainable, Organic or Biodynamic Green Certified

Region: France / Rhône
Grapes: 59% Roussanne, 33% Clairette, 6% Grenache blanc, 2% Bourboulenc

Clos de Beauvenir Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc comes from a single vineyard enclosed by Provencal galets. Hand harvesting and sorting is done early in the morning to take advantage of the cooler temperatures. All the whole grapes except Roussane are slowly pressed for 3 hours to extract only premium juice. After 24 hours, the juice is racked and fermentation begins at a low temperature to protect all flavors. The Roussanne fermentation takes place in 228 liter barrels (1/3 new), and then ages on lees. Wine from the other grape varietals are made in temperature controlled stainless steel vats and then stored to age on lees. The wine is aged 9 months in a combination (85/15) of French oak barrels and stainless steel vats and blending takes place shortly before bottling.

harvest note

Summer 2013 was hot and dry, allowing the grapes to ripen perfectly. The famous “Mistral’ wind, cold and dry, blows very frequently through the vineyards protecting them from diseases. The vines, facing south and grown on terraces that are planted on soil composed of sand, sandstone, and calcareous rocks. The area is rich with centuries old olive and grain groves, symbols of the significant historical agricultural heritage. The vines average 30 years old and all the vineyards are certified “organically grown” by Ecocert.

tasting note

Nice pale yellow, green tints with a lot of brilliance. The nose is intense and complex with white flowers, honeysuckle, citrus, brioche, nuts and pastry aromas. On the palate, a perfect balance between roundness and sweetness; oak is fine, elegant and very well integrated. The finish is long on vanilla and candied fruit with a mineral touch.

food pairing

A perfect complement to nearly all seafood dishes, especially full- flavored shellfish and assertively seasoned snapper or striped bass. This complex and refined cuvée is also well suited for poultry dishes, veal and pork as well as strong cheeses.

One of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s oldest estates, archives affirm Château La Nerthe’s existence as early as 1560 and suggest an even more distant past dating to the dawn of the region’s wine culture in the 12th century.
