Penedès and the greater Catalunya DO provide a tapestry of terroir that allows Poema to offer a diverse portfolio of top quality sparkling and still Spanish wine.
Terroir & Vineyards
The Penedès valley’s three regions offer perfect terroirs for growing the trio of indigenous grapes used to craft traditional Cava. The High Penedès (over 500 meters above sea level) is hilly with a chalky soil, ideal for the Parellada grape, while the limestone and clay soils of the coastal Low and Central (up to 500 meters above sea level) Penedès are excellent matches for the Macabeo and Xarel-lo grapes.
Poema proudly owns 72 acres of vineyards directly surrounding Subirats and Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, the village celebrated as the birthplace of Cava. In addition, 304 acres in four different areas are controlled through long-term programs with local farmers. The limestone-rich soils of Conca de Barberà, to the west, yield the Trepat grapes for Poema’s rosé.
Catalunya encompasses many famous Spanish subregions in the Iberian Peninsula’s northeast, providing an excellent palette for Poema’s Red Blend and White Blend. The diverse, Mediterranean-influenced climate makes it an ideal winegrowing location. The coast is known for dry and hot summers and mild winters, whereas inland vineyards experience hot summers and cold winters. To the north, the Pyrenees provide a high mountain climate with very cold and snowy winters and hot summers with abundant rainfall. The resulting blends balance ripe, luscious flavor and texture with fresh, vibrant acidity.
