The legend of Tia Maria dates back to the mid-17th century during the time of the colonial war, when a beautiful young Spanish aristocrat was forced to flee the island of Jamaica.
While she fled, her maid saved one family treasure, a small jewelry box. The jewelry box contained two things: black pearl earrings and an ancient recipe for a mysterious dark liqueur. This recipe was named after the courageous woman: Tia Maria.
In 1950s, the recipe was rediscovered by Dr. Kenneth Leigh Evans, who began to produce it in mass quantities.
