Grapes: 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot
Clay and sand soils as well as Tuscany’s special stony galestro limestone, combined with ideal sun exposure and a climate tempered by the Mediterranean, provide an ideal climate for the Sangiovese grape. Low yields of excellent-quality hand harvested fruit ensure a rich and concentrated result. Following hand sorting and destemming, grapes are fermented in a combination of temperature-controlled and lined open-top tanks. Lots are blended first when the wine is placed in barriques and again at the first racking. Crognolo is aged for 10-14 months in French Allier barriques and 5-6 months in bottle.

Wine & Spirits2013 vintage
Vintage 2013 was less warm and cooler than 2012. The optimal temperature range between day and night enhanced and underlined the difference between the different varieties. Less concentration and much more elegance allowed Cabernet and Merlot to evolve better, and Sangiovese could reach the perfect level of maturation. Acidity is interesting but not invasive, tannis are important and will evolve in a superior quality in mouth. Picking up before the October rains, the harvest was not compromised and we got healthy grapes and compact bunches. Wines result then very complex and elegant at the nose, and at the same time characteristic and varietal. In the mouth the structure is harmonic and there are perfect proportions between acidity and tannins. The best features for a great year.
Intense ruby red in color, the wine has a fruity, spicy bouquet and ripe cherry and berries on the palate. It has the vivid acidity typical of Sangiovese, with well-integrated tannins and an earthy finish.
Delicious with full flavored meats, game and roasts.

about the grape +
Merlot makes plump, succulent wines to drink young or opulently massive wines for aging. Has silky, blackberry and currant fruit, with spice, earth, tobacco and chocolate notes, and soft tannins.
Sangiovese has aromas of black cherries with alluring wood, smoke, tar and herbal notes. The best wines made from this grape have incredible complexity, depth, finesse and power.
