Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2011

Tenuta La Fuga

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2011 play

Region: Italy / Tuscany / Montalcino
Grapes: Sangiovese

Montalcino’s vineyards are sheltered by Mount Amiata and kept dry by sea breezes from across the hills to the west. Densely planted vineyards produce low average yields, allowing wines with concentration, complexity and considerable aging potential. Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature. Maceration lasted about 15 days in steel vats before malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. The wine was aged in large Slovenian oak casks for three years and then one year in bottle before release.

harvest note

The year began with a fairly cold winter with low temperatures, constant rain allowing the soil to store plenty of water. A warm, rainy end of winter opened up to a mild, wet spring until late May and early June, very helpful in ensuring good water reserves for the vines, which developed somewhat earlier than the norm. Late June and early July were very hot, speeding up the final stages of grape development. August was hot and arid, helped by big night/day temperature differences in September. The late September rains lowered temperatures, especially in the higher vineyards. The weather provided for balanced fruit; the wines are high in quality with good intense colour, fairly smooth tannins and nicely developed varietal aromas.

tasting note

The wine shows intense red berry aromas with leather and incense notes. On the palate, clean, juicy, herb-inflected flavors take over before robust, polished tannins on the long finish.

food pairing

This wine pairs well with beef and lamb, venison, boar, game birds and hard aged cheeses.
