La Forra Riserva is produced as a single-vineyard Chianti only in exceptional vintages. Only the finest Sangiovese grapes are selected for this wine, from Nozzole’s 200 acres of vineyards in the Chianti Classico zone between Florence and Siena. La Forra is among the estate’s finest parcels, with 35-year-old vines on a south-facing slope at 300 meters in elevation. Grapes were manually harvested, destemmed and crushed. Fermentation was on the skins in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and maceration on the lees took 15 days, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged 16 months in French oak barrels, with a minimum of 6 months in bottle.
2011 was a balanced vintage. Some heat at the end of the season was mitigated by the clay soils of Nozzole vineyards. Water reserves accumulated over some months helped vines manage higher temperatures near the end of the growing cycle. In addition, the Sangiovese vines have become well-adapted to the climate of the Chianti region. As a result, the grape bunches ripened 1-2 weeks earlier than normal. Good conditions during the change of seasons contributed to a great vintage in Chianti Classico. A warm winter with rain introduced a mild spring, with rain around the end of May and beginning of June. This was a good water supply for the vines, whose development was slightly advanced. Heat at the end of June and beginning of July accelerated ripening. August was very hot with no rain before cool September temp’s completed the season. Quantity fell 10% on average.
Crisp, ripe, red berry and cherry aromas are shaped by vibrant, fresh acidity. In the mouth, flavors show classic Sangiovese notes of earth, mushrooms and leather, with a backbone of firm yet elegant tannins.
