Michele Chiarlo

Il Principe Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2014

Region: Italy / Piedmont / Langhe Nebbiolo DOC
Grapes: 100% Nebbiolo

100% Nebbiolo from vineyards of Barbaresco and Vezza d’Alba in the hillsides of Roero area. The soil is made up of bluish-grey, sand-rich, clayey calcareous marl; it is a soil poor in organic substances but with a considerable percentage of manganese and potassium. Highly evident is its typicality, characterized by varietal flavours and by the influence of the Roero terroir. Il Principe is a Nebbiolo that has been left to refine in large vats for a year; its organoleptic characteristics are extraordinarily classical. It is a noble wine of excellent character and pleasantness, suited to medium ageing.

harvest note

After a fairly rainy Spring, in June we had an early summer with high temperatures followed by a July and August with many cloudy days, below average temperatures and several days of rain. Weather conditions that required a very careful management of the greenery, the more numerous fungicidal treatments and a meticulous control of yields. In September the weather improved greatly, with sunny days and temperatures within the average for the period; ultimately it was in Piedmont that the vintage was complicated and required a lot of work, but with results we consider good. However, we witnessed a curious situation in a limited area where the rainfall was much lower than in other areas, Barbaresco. This helped lead to a an excellent harvest, in fact Barbaresco 2014 is considered by all the producers to be of a high level. Nebbiolo Il Principe is produced with grapes from Barbaresco and Vezza d’Alba in the Roero area. More than half our Langhe Nebbiolo comes from vineyards in Barbaresco and the rest from Roero, and its quality is therefore of a surprising level, comparable to the excellent 2013. The harvest was made during the first week of October, the fermentation lasted 15 days at contact with skins and after malolactic fermentation the refinement was made in big Allier barrels for 12 months prior the bottling. Our technique of vinification and refinement are very traditional, without using small new barrels, and they perfectly preserve the character of Nebbiolo varietal.
