Champagne Taittinger
Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2002
Region:
France
/ Champagne
Grapes: 100% Chardonnay
Produced only in exceptional vintage years and intended as the ultimate expression of the Taittinger style, this wine is composed entirely of Chardonnay grapes grown in the top vineyards of the prestigious Côte des Blancs. Only the first press juice is used. A small proportion (5%) of the blend spends three to four months in new oak barrels, enhancing the intrinsic qualities of the final blend. Prior to disgorgement, the Blanc de Blancs is aged for 10 years on the lees in 13th-century chalk cellars that were once the property of Saint Nicaise abbey.

2002 vintageharvest note
2002 was marked by low rainfall and a relatively mild winter. The summer was a succession of hot, sunny days. Shortly before harvest, the rain arrived but soon disappeared, giving way to sunshine once more. Unusually for Champagne, instead of growing after the rain, the bunches of grapes lost weight through lack of water. The harvest overall was considered great by many producers and lasted from the middle of September through to the end with the conclusion from all being that 2002 was indeed a good vintage. The first tastings revealed well-rounded, supple, open and mature wines. The Chardonnays long, sweet and very aromatic with, according to the cru, a dominant floral or fruity flavor.
tasting note
Its pale golden yellow is characteristic from the best Chardonnay grapes in the Côte des Blancs. The very fresh nose offers a wonderful combination of minerality and fruity sweetness. This is very quickly followed by elegant fruit aromas which include mandarin and orange peel. The mid palate is ample, intense and rich. Notes of mandarin, fresh pineapple and lightly candied fruit balance with the acidity. The finish is very expressive.
food pairing
A perfect accompaniment to first courses such as seafood and shellfish.

ChardonnayThough it has a distinctive profile, Chardonnay reflects other factors such as soil composition and vinification technique. Chardonnay is a reliable, hardy and prolific vine whose only real vulnerabilities are frost and uneven development of fruit.
