Classic Malbec 2013

Alta Vista

Classic Malbec 2013

Region: Argentina / Mendoza
Grapes: 100% Malbec

Alta Vista’s Classic Malbec exhibits the true character of its grape variety. Fresh and intense, this wine’s aromas and flavors provide an excellent introduction to the fresh, fruit-forward characteristics and overall quality of wines from Argentina. Hand-picked grapes are carefully separated from the stems. Fermentation takes place with selected yeast over a period of 7 days, with frequent pumping over, at a controlled temperature of 78ºF-82ºF. After fermentation, the wine undergoes 10 days of extended maceration to enhance volume and quality of the tannins. The wine is aged in American oak for 6 months.

harvest note

The 2013 harvest was characterised by a good crop. A long, cool growing season produced what many winemakers are calling fresh wines. Up and down temperatures tested winemakers’ patience and required long hang times for grapes to reach full maturation. Malbec, which dominates the country’s quality wine production, was able to fully ripen, yet cool temperatures, especially at night, helped preserve the grape’s intense acidity and aromatics. Much needed spring rains and an absence of a major frost led to a good fruit set as Alta Vista winemakers reported normal to 25 percent higher yields. Hail damage, a regular threat in Mendoza’s high-altitude vineyards, was minimal.

tasting note

This wine has an intense nose, with aromas of red fruit, particularly plums, and with vanilla notes and subtle coffee touches resulting from its storage in oak. On the palate one finds a freshness and soft, rounded tannins, recalling those fruity sensations in the nose.

food pairing

This wine is quite approachable, fun and easy-to-drink, perfect for every-day consumption and for relaxed, casual foods like Panini sandwiches, pizza and beef or pork empanadas.
