Château La Nerthe

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Private Reserve

Certified Sustainable, Organic or Biodynamic Green Certified

Region: France / Rhône

Chateau La Nerthe is one of the oldest and largest estates in Châteauneuf du Pape. The terroir is typical for the region with vineyards on a slope with sandy-clay soil. On the surface there is a layer of the famous galets (large, round, well-worn stones that originated in the alps) having been carried down to the Rhône region by glaciers during the ice ages. The farther down the slope of the vineyard the more these stones dominate. Grenache dominates 62% of vineyards with an average vine age of over 40 years. All grapes are handpicked, sorted and put into vats for 18 to 21 days, with regular pump overs and punch downs. Maceration lasts an additional 18 to 20 days and at the end they're racked into concrete tanks for malolactic fermentation. Once this second fermentation is complete, the cuvée is racked in large French oak casks ('Foundres') and aged for 12 months before blending and bottled 6 months later.

tasting note

This elegant and modern styled wine shows ripe dark berries, with a touch of 'garrigue' and pepper. The mouth is round, with silky tannins and sweet spices. We have once again these ripe and over ripe dark fruits, cherry and blackberry. Enjoyable now, but can also be aged for an additional 10 to 20 years in propoer storage conditions.

One of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s oldest estates, archives affirm Château La Nerthe’s existence as early as 1560 and suggest an even more distant past dating to the dawn of the region’s wine culture in the 12th century.
