The Bolgheri terrain is extremely well suited to the Bordeaux grapes—Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
Terroir & Vineyards
Bolgheri is blessed with a very favorable climate, tempered by sea breezes from the nearby Tirrhenian Sea, which promotes even ripening and overall riper fruit than in inland Tuscany. The terrain, a mixture of clay and sand, generally slopes slightly toward the sea. It has proved to be extremely well suited to the Bordeaux grapes—Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
At the Campo al Mare vineyards in Bolgheri, the vines are cultivated at a density of 2,530 stocks per acre and yield approximately 6,500 kilos of fruit per hectare (2.9 tons per acre). Campo al Mare Vermentino is produced from grapes cultivated in vineyards closer to the sea, where vines are planted at a density of 2,225 stocks per acre and yield approximately 7,500 kilos of fruit per hectare (3.35 tons per acre).
