Benziger Family Winery
Terroir & Vineyards
The estate lies in the tiny Sonoma Mountain appellation, on the east-facing flank of Sonoma Mountain, looking toward the town of Glen Ellen. The property is situated in a terraced volcanic bowl on the eastern edge of the appellation, curving a full 360 degrees around the crater’s midslope at about 800 feet in elevation. The estate is unusual for its diverse spectrum of soils, of which 21 distinct types have been identified.
Benziger strives to maximize the potential of the vineyards by using sustainable, organic or biodynamic farming methods on every one of them. In addition, the family has created one of the first certified sustainability programs, Farming for Flavors, with third-party verification. Beginning in 2007, all of the Benziger grower partners had to become certified in one of these practices.
